Bookfessional: Conventions and Other Author Events

Before I joined Rabid Reads, I’d never been to a convention. That’s not to say that you have to be a blogger or somehow connected to the industry to attend a convention, I just didn’t know anything about them, so I never went.

I’d never been to a book signing either.

True story. Crazy, right?

BUT.

In the two and a half years since, I’ve been to more book signings than I can comfortably name off the top of my head, and next week, I’ll be off to convention #3: NOLA StoryCon.

*throws confetti in the air* *moonwalks* *booty shakes*

It’s going to be a bit different than what I’ve gotten used to—it’s almost completely author-focused, the end, no gaming, steampunk afternoon teas, or MARVEL themed dance parties, etc. Just a couple dozen authors and a handful of literary agents.

Just . . . *snorts*

For those of you who are hearing about NOLA StoryCon for the first time, it’s headlined by some of my favorite urban fantasy writers: Ilona Andrews, Kelley Armstrong, Jeaniene Frost, Melissa Marr, and Jennifer L. Armentrout, with Charlaine Harris as Special Guest.

I KNOW, RIGHT?!

That’s the thing about Cons and book signings—you get to meet the creators of the people and places that populate your favorite escapes. You get to ask them questions and get answers. You get to listen to their funny anecdotal stories and get to know them as real people.

It’s friggin’ awesome.

I make no promises, but if you have a question you’re dying to ask about a beloved character or series, leave it in a comment (and the author for whom it’s intended), and if an opportunity presents itself, I’ll do my best to get answers.

Regardless, I promise a full report when I return.

What about you? Have you ever attended an author event and/or convention? What was your experience? Feel free to share your own adventures.

Jessica Signature

My name is Jessica and I live in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I’m trying my hand at writing, but mostly I read. My favorite genres are Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Science Fiction, Urban Fantasy, and the YA versions of those genres, but if there is a book of a different color getting lots of buzz, I’ll read it too, just to be informed. If I’m not reading or writing, I’m probably on Goodreads or Pinterest or baking blueberry pies because I love them.

  1. Jessica from a GREAT read

Yay!! I’m going to this too!! Signed up for it over a year ago and am SUPER excited!! I get super excited to just about any author event I go to!! Hope to see you there! 😀

  2. I hope you had a blast at StoryCon! I don’t have a lot near me for signings or cons. I’be gone to one book signing for my favorite author Kristan Higgins. It was so much fun.

I’ve also been to ALA and ALA Mid-Winter and only on the exhibit floor so it wasn’t really a conference.
