Once, they lived in secret alongside mankind. Now, emerged from the shadows, the Breed faces enemies on both sides—human and vampire alike. No one knows that better than Lazaro Archer, one of the eldest, most powerful of his kind. His beloved Breedmate and family massacred by a madman twenty years ago, Lazaro refuses to open his heart again.

Sworn to his duty as the leader of the Order’s command center in Italy, the last thing the hardened warrior wants is to be tasked with the rescue and safekeeping of an innocent woman in need of his protection. But when a covert mission takes a deadly wrong turn, Lazaro finds himself in the unlikely role of hero with a familiar, intriguing beauty he should not desire, but cannot resist.

Melena Walsh has never forgotten the dashing Breed male who saved her life as a child. But the chivalrous hero of her past is in hard contrast to the embittered, dangerous man on whom her safety now depends. And with an unwanted—yet undeniable—desire igniting between them, Melena fears that Lazaro’s protection may come at the price of her heart….

Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed novels are among my favorite all time paranormal reads. I bought this one almost a month ago, and I have been wanting to find the time to read it sooner rather then later. That's the longest a Lara Adrian book has ever sat in my to be read pile. I am happy to say that it was worth the wait.

Lazaro Archer was introduced, several books back in the original series. He is one of the first Generation One Breeds(vampire like creatures), very powerful, and over a thousand years old. Twenty years before, he lost his entire family, when enemies killed everyone in his home. He was away at the time, but still blames himself. Melena is a Breedmate, and a daughter of a Breed colleague of Lazaro’s. She’s beautiful, strong willed, and as a Breedmate, is one of the few women that a Breed male can blood bond with. They met when Melena was seven years old. Now twenty nine, she meets him once again when her father meets with Lazaro and Paolo Turati, a brother to his country’s(Italy) president. His brother is against the Breed, but Paolo is not. This secret meeting is a sort of peace talk between the Breed and humans. When things take a tragic turn, everything changes.

As this is a novella, that’s all the story I am going to talk about. However, since all of these books are romances, on top of being urban fantasy, I will say that this is Lazaro’s romantic journey, one that he never again wanted, after losing his Breedmate.

I really enjoyed Melena as a character. She has never been in love, and really had no idea how it would effect her, and wow does it effect her! Lazaro, wasn’t exactly my favorite character this time around. He was closed off and stern, all after effects of losing his mate and family. That was understandable, so I got over it.

Not only was this a romance(complete with hot sex scenes), but it also was about the politics against the Breed in the human world. It’s only been twenty years since the Breed became known to humans, and they are not exactly beloved. There’s even a thriller aspect. So even though it is a novella, the reader gets a pretty much full on story. I think it could have easily made for a good full size novel as well.

I enjoyed this read, and recommend it to all paranormal/urban fantasy fans.

I’m Lorna and I live in Maryland. Since retiring, I spend my time mostly reading and reviewing books. My favorite reads are Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, and Young Adult. I read a lot of indie books in addition to traditionally published books. Favorite paranormal creature? Vampires, but I am really liking werewolves more everyday.

  1. I discovered this series when I was on a rebound from BDB (having just read the recent instalment at the time, and looking relatively lost…lol). Unfortunately, I stalled after the third book. I saw echoes of BDB, so I thought it was a poor substitute. I’m glad this is one series that you religiously follow, though and that you’ve been enjoying them so far. 🙂
