Lock In
by John Scalzi
Science Fiction Fantasy
|
|
[learn_more caption=”Book Description”]A blazingly inventive near-future thriller from the best-selling, Hugo Award-winning John Scalzi.
Not too long from today, a new, highly contagious virus makes its way across the globe. Most who get sick experience nothing worse than flu, fever and headaches. But for the unlucky one percent – and nearly five million souls in the United States alone – the disease causes “Lock In”: Victims fully awake and aware, but unable to move or respond to stimulus. The disease affects young, old, rich, poor, people of every color and creed. The world changes to meet the challenge.
A quarter of a century later, in a world shaped by what’s now known as “Haden’s syndrome,” rookie FBI agent Chris Shane is paired with veteran agent Leslie Vann. The two of them are assigned what appears to be a Haden-related murder at the Watergate Hotel, with a suspect who is an “integrator” – someone who can let the locked in borrow their bodies for a time. If the Integrator was carrying a Haden client, then naming the suspect for the murder becomes that much more complicated.
But “complicated” doesn’t begin to describe it. As Shane and Vann began to unravel the threads of the murder, it becomes clear that the real mystery – and the real crime – is bigger than anyone could have imagined. The world of the locked in is changing, and with the change comes opportunities that the ambitious will seize at any cost. The investigation that began as a murder case takes Shane and Vann from the halls of corporate power to the virtual spaces of the locked in, and to the very heart of an emerging, surprising new human culture. It’s nothing you could have expected.[/learn_more] |

With Maddy torn between two loves, Guardian Jackson and heroic pilot Tom, and Angels and humans on the brink of an epic war, the Immortal City is more vulnerable than ever. And when demons descend upon Angel City with the intent to destroy, the humans don’t stand a fighting chance without the Angels on their side.
Will Jacks find the strength and forgiveness to enter the fray and fight the demons as a stronger-than-ever Battle Angel? Or has the damage been so great that the Guardians will set off for the next place, abandoning Angel City in its darkest hour?
It all comes down to love-wrecked half-Angel Maddy and the strength of her bond with Jackson in this game-changing, thrice-as-sultry series finale that blends beautiful themes of redemption and renewal with heart-pounding action scenes and jaw-dropping twists.[/learn_more] |

So many releases today… but I only know about few of those titles.
From those I want to read Havoc, The Girl of Fire and Thorns Stories and I’m on the fence about Stone Cold Lover. I read first book in that series and kind of liked it, but I’m not sure it was enough to read second book. I think I’ll wait to read some reviews and decide afterwards.
I read The Beautiful Ashes, I wasn’t crazy about it, but will read second book… it’s Jeaniene Frost after all. I also read Evernight and loved it!!

Evernight was indeed awesome. I liked The Beautiful Ashes, but I didn’t LOVE it. But, like you said, it’s Jeaniene Frost, so I have high hopes for book 2.
WOW, that’s a lot of new releases this week! I had The Beautiful Ashes on pre-order, so it arrived on my kindle this morning. Guess what I’m reading? *grins*
I can’t believe I didn’t know about the Phoenix Fire series by Cynthia Eden. That has been remedied now, and it’s on my virtual shelf.
Thanks for sharing, Carmel!

I love pre-order day, when you wake-up, turn on your kindle, and you’re like oooh new books!
Great list, I see several that I will have to get now.

It’s the end of the month, so this week’s list is a little cray-cray!
I have a few that I put on my library list and had 2 pre-orders (audio) this week (Scalzi and a historical) 🙂

You shouldn’t be pre-ordering stuff what with your library event coming up, and all. Shame on you! 😉
LOL this is very true 🙂 However the Scalzi was a 2 for 1 (you got both versions if you pre-ordered last week- Amber Benson and Will Wheaton) and I auto-buy Lorraine 🙂

No problem! Happy one-clicking!
Oooo lots of YA out this week! I really enjoyed the Aftermath, I’m not a big gamer so the whole concept was something really new and different to me. I love the Midnight Liaisons series, I’d lost track of it for a while so thank you for putting it back on my radar Carmel! Off to Amazon I go…
I am a gamer, so I like the sound of The Aftermath, and reviews have been good. But, I’m already into October though for my reviews…
Yay me! I know a few of these this week. lol
Lock In was pretty good – not my usual genre but I liked it. LOVED Havoc & I have Jeannine’s coming up. I didn’t realize Cynthia Eden had a new one out.
Good week for books!
Only a few? Lucky for you, I’m here to fill-in the blanks!
I got Beautiful Ashes, that’s it from the list although there are a few I’ll be adding to my wish list. I had a big day with Contemporary Romance this week 🙂

There are too many to count! Happy reading!
Yay! The Beautiful Ashes is here! And Unborn! Oh, and a new Keri Arthur?!? Thanks for sharing the new releases, Carmel!
The Keri Arthur book is a re-release of an older title, but yes, there’s plenty to get excited about this week. 🙂
Wow! Loads of great new releases this week. How do you keep up? I really want to read a few of these. Are you going to be reviewing any of these?

I’m sure a missed a bunch, but I got most of the big ones I think. My review of The Beautiful Ashes went live last Friday, I’m hosting the Evernight blog tour next Monday, and Lorna’s review of Unborn posted last Saturday. Those are the only 3 I can think of off the top of my head.
This reminds me, I have to read The Aftermath. I want to try Feral too.

The Aftermath looks really good; I haven’t heard much about Feral, so I’ll be sure to check out your review!
Wow, lots of goodies this week! I’m excited for WAY too many of them, but I do plan on reading for sure Unborn and Memory Zero. And the library has me as #1 on hold for The Beautiful Ashes 🙂

Hehe It pays to be first in line! Did you reserve it 6 months ago? 😉
Yep, just about. I LOVE it when I can out beat others in line at the library holding system. LOL, I’m evil like that when it comes to books 😉
