Zoë Merrick lived a less than ordinary life, until late one night, she was brutally attacked and left for dead.

A man named Adam spotted her running down the road covered in blood, and took her under his wing. Zoë didn't just survive that night - she underwent a physical transformation and acquired strange new abilities. Severed from her old life, her frustration grows as she tries to comprehend what's happening to her.

Serendipity leads her to Justus. He's handsome, arrogant, and not entirely human. Zoë learns the truth about what she is, and just how dangerous their world is for a young Mage. The only way she will understand her power is by putting her trust in this man, and accepting the protection he offers.

When her immortal freedom is threatened by the one man who has a right to claim her, Zoë learns the price of freedom...and the value of loyalty.

Like all sorts of supernatural characters? Well you are in luck if you decide to read this book and series. This is the first book in the excellent Mageri series that is one of the best paranormal series that I have ever read. Since that’s mostly what I read, that is saying a lot!

Zoe is an ordinary, late twenty something career woman that lives in a big city alone with her cat. Her best friend Sunny makes her come out to dinner with her one night. Extremely bad idea and the catalyst for the end of life as Zoe knows it. On her way home, she is attacked. And then she dies. This is just the start of the five book series and I should tell you that this book is not about a ghost. What she becomes is one of the most interesting and different supernatural characters that I have ever read about.

From the very first line of this story, I knew I was in for something really different. It starts out humorous and moves on to horrific pretty quickly. And then it just gets really good as in knock your socks off good. To say I couldn’t put it down is a major understatement. The author has the ability to suck you into her books and not let you go until she has wrung every emotion from you and then she manages to wring out even more then you even suspected you had in you-especially as the series moves on.

Ms. Dark’s supernatural world building is just phenomenal. It’s Urban Fantasy at it’s finest. The author writes about vampires and shifters but she also has come up with some extremely different, alternative characters that were new to me. Not all of them show up in this book; you meet more of them as you read the series. The good part for the reader that hasn’t discovered this series yet, is that all five books are available now. Only three were available when I started the series and I was on pins and needles waiting for each book as they came out. When you finish the series, you realize just how well plotted each book is, in that little nuances from book 1( or book 2 or 3) are tied to things that happen in book 5.

As far as romance goes with this series, I can safely say it was one of the best I have ever read. Since this is Urban Fantasy, I am not going to spoil it and say exactly when this happens. If you miss reading this series, you will miss out on one of the best alpha male characters I have ever read about. But even more then that, Ms. Dark has written a whole cast of characters that will enchant you and keep you reading to see what happens with each of them.

Romance, suspense, supernatural characters, what more could you ask for in a paranormal series? Each of these books get better as you go. And it all starts with Sterling.

I’m Lorna and I live in Maryland. Since retiring, I spend my time mostly reading and reviewing books. My favorite reads are Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, and Young Adult. I read a lot of indie books in addition to traditionally published books. Favorite paranormal creature? Vampires, but I am really liking werewolves more everyday.

  1. I LOVE The Mageri series! It just gets better and better. I’m looking forward to starting Dannika’s Seven series that’s set in the same world.

    Welcome to Rabid Reads Lorna!

  2. wow I haven’t read any books by this author but now I’m curious. I think I might have one in ebook somewhere… but haven’t tried it. This one sounds great and really perfect for me. I’m definitely curious now.

  3. Great review! This is a series that has been sitting on my tbr longer than I’d like to admit, but I didn’t realize it was so creatively good. I’ve heard raving about it, but it wasn’t that high on my list, mainly because I have so many other books to read. And I’m pretty sure I actually read a short story in an anthology that was connected to this now – about Sunny? Hmmm… I need to check that out.

    • Thank you Berls! I can totally relate about the tbr pile of books for sure! Dannika has a novella out that takes place in the same world called Closer. The male character’s sister is Sunny but she isn’t in it. Maybe that’s what you read?
