Question: Did RT Get It Right?

Posted November 21, 2013 by Carmel in Question / 13 Comments

Last week, RT Romantic Times announced their annual award nominees. Do you agree/disagree with their choices? Did they miss any award-worthy titles? Here’s my 2 cents on their picks:

Wolf With Benefits by Shelly Laurenston
Only Lycans Need Apply by Michele Bardsley
Breath of Fire by Liliana Hart
Macrieve by Kresley Cole
Savage Betrayal by Shelli Stevens
Kinked by Thea Harrison

I devour a lot of shapeshifter novels in any given year so I’m a little surprised that I haven’t read any of this year’s nominees. Two of them are even werewolf titles! My vote would probably go to either Kresley Cole’s Macrieve or Thea Harrison’s Kinked.

Gates of Rapture by Caris Roane
The Dark Heroine by Abigail Gibbs
Twice Tempted by Jeaniene Frost
Darkness Avenged by Alexandra Ivy
Darkness Rises by Dianne Duvall
Prince of Shadows by Tes Hilaire

This one’s a toughie because both Darkness Rises and Twice Tempted were 5-star reads for me. I’d be happy if either book won.

Demon Hunting in a Dive Bar by Lexi George
Omega by Susannah Sandlin
The Cursed by Alyssa Day
A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses by Molly Harper
Heart of Obsidian by Nalini Singh
The Five Deaths of Roxanne Love by Erin Quinn
Fury of Desire by Coreene Callahan
Black and Blue by Gena Showalter

I’ve only read one of these titles and Molly Harper is always a winner in my books so I’d have to go with A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses. I’m also a little shocked that J.R. Ward’s Lover at Last isn’t among the nominees for best paranormal romance.

Blood Warrior by Lindsey Piper
Guardian Demon by Meljean Brook
Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon
The Night is Forever by Heather Graham
Naughty Karma by Vivi Andrews
Reaver by Larissa Ione

Reaver is on my wishlist, I plan on reading it once it’s published and I’m a huge fan of Larissa Ione’s. Enough said.

Blood Oranges by Kathleen Tierney
Dead Things by Stephen Blackmoore
Written in Red by Anne Bishop
Mountain Echoes by C.E. Murphy
The Shambling Guide to New York City by Mur Lafferty
Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews

I just finished listening to Magic Rises earlier this week so this one’s a no brainer for me; Ilona Andrews all the way! Mind you, I have been meaning to check-out Written in Red… Also, I think that Kevin Hearne’s Hunted should have been nominated in one of the UF categories.

Frost Burned by Patricia Briggs
Hot Blooded by Amanda Carlson
Binding the Shadows by Jenn Bennett
Tempest Reborn by Nicole Peeler
Blood Bond by Jeanne C. Stein
Watcher of the Dark by Joseph Nassise

There are so many great candidates among these nominees but one in particular really stands out in my eyes and that’s Cady from Jenn Bennett’s Binding the Shadows. I LOVE this series! However, I do think that Darynda Jones’ heroine, Charlie Davidson should be on this list too.

Touch of the Demon by Diana Rowland
Blood Winter by Diana Pharaoh Francis
Trickster by Jeff Somers
Last Blood by Kristen Painter
Heart of Venom by Jennifer Estep
Ritual Magic by Eileen Wilks

Jennifer Estep is one of my favourite authors so it should come as no surprise when I tell you that Heart of Venom gets my vote in this category.

What do you think? Did RT get it right?

  1. I’ve not read any of the Best Shapeshifters but most of them are on my TBR and the ones that are I’ve read books in those series so they are good picks I’m sure.

Best Vampire, I’ve only read Twice Tempted and it’s Vlad all the way!

Best PNR, I’ve only read Molly Harper and she’s always a good pick.

Best PNR World Building, I’ve not read any of those books but Ione does a great job.

Best UF – Ilona Andrews FTW

Best UF Protagonist – Where’s Gin Blanco?

Best UF World Building – Estep FTW

  2. Ha! So many good books but I’m a newbie in the genre so I can comment on a lot of these. Happy to see some of the books that ive read and rated good made it to the list.

  3. It is a bit strange that Reaver is not published yet, so how can you vote for a book you have not been able to read?
For me, the very best book of this year, I agree with Julie: Written in Red. If you have not yet read it Carmel, go for it. I have read it 5 times already. 11 stars out of 10.
I also do recommend Susannah Sandlin, original and just good.

  4. I haven’t read a lot of these books yet, but I have to say that for world building DPF’s Blood Winter definitely gets my vote. I adore that world she built and wish there was more coming from that series.
