Having narrowly averted an (under)world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans' voodoo queen just keeps on giving-leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.
Jeanine Frost reverts back to the roots of the Night Huntress series in this 6th book. The action is never-ending and the bad guy is particularly loathsome. I couldn’t help but have a smile on my face when Cat is finally able to unleash a can of whop ass on this spook. One Grave at a Time makes up for the slight disappointment that I felt upon reading the previous book. This was not my favorite book in the Night Huntress series but it met my expectations and gave me a chance to revisit a few of my favorite characters in paranormal fiction.
One Grave at a Time lacks the sizzling chemistry between Cat and Bones that I’ve come to expect out of this series. Actually, let me rephrase that… they’re still the most perfect undead couple ever and the love between them makes me turn all girlie inside. What I meant by my first sentence is that if you’re going into this book expecting a colossal sex scene you’re going to be disappointed. Admittedly, every time that I start a new book of Jeaniene’s I can’t help but hope for her to top chapter 32 from One Foot in the Grave but I’m beginning to realize that that may just be damn near impossible! I was happy to see that this book falls more into the Urban Fantasy genre than the Paranormal Romance one. I enjoy some headboard breaking nookie as much as the next girl but ultimately it’s the non-stop action that really gets me and this book has it in spades.
Many of this series’ beloved characters make appearances. I was crossing my fingers for more Vlad but alas… At least I can console myself with the fact that he’s going to have his own book soon! I always get a kick out of Ian and I was happy for the doses of pervy sarcasm that he injected into this read. Denise also plays a small role in this story. I knew from previous books and the spin-off that she’s nearly invincible but at one point, everything around her grounds to a halt for one jaw dropping moment. Whoa! Her hubby Spade is never far away either and if you mess with his woman there’s going to be hell to pay! I enjoyed his little smirk after he extracts vengeance on a bad guy who messed with his wife. Cat was trying to do the right thing even though she wanted this particular person to pay but Charles had no qualms about evening the score.
I really enjoyed Jeaniene’s choice of the big bad in this novel. Kramer’s just downright nasty and I had a vetted interest in seeing Cat and Bones defeat him. He’s not your typical brute either; yes he does pack quite the punch but he’s also conniving and malicious. Kramer manages to give the vamps the slip more than once and although I hated him I couldn’t help but respect his high level of evilness. There was next to no conflict between my favorite undead duo in One Grave at a Time but I didn’t feel its absence like I did in This Side of the Grave. Jeaniene manages to have peace reign between Cat and Bones without sacrificing any of the action that I’ve come to love in this series.
The 6th installment in the Night Huntress series satisfied my need for more of Jeaniene’s fantastic characters and maintained its trademark high level of action until the very end. Although this wasn’t my favorite, One Grave at a Time helped to maintain this series’ momentum and put a smile on my face. My addiction to Cat and Bones is not at risk of waning any time soon. It’s time to reset my countdown and eagerly await the return of my favorite duo.

I couldn’t afford number 5 when it came out and from the reviews I thought the series was going downhill. After reading this review I might pick 5 and 6 up. Kramer sounds like the kind of villain I love to hate.
Just finished this one last night and I have to say I totally agree with your review. Great job Carmel!
@Lissa – Book 5 definitely wasn’t the stronger book in this series but Jeaniene bounced back with this one.
@Julie – Thanks. I’ll keep my eyes open for yours!
