Danann Frost is thousands of years old, yet young for her kind. She is a creature of the Light, an Angel, one of the Seraphim; a race of beings that live beyond our world. She has been cast out of paradise and Fallen from Grace, all for the love of a Dark One – a vampire. The only problem is, Seth did not want her and told her to go and not come back. Danann has made a life for herself amongst the vampires of this world and they protect her fragile nature. She and the vampire Asher live on the fringes of the human world; love and loyalty cannot separate them but trouble and vengeance are on their way. After two hundred years of enduring the crippling punishments of her Fall, Seth walks back into her life but he is bitter and angry and out for revenge. Thank God he is after someone else…or is he? Can Danann escape the dark intentions of her once-beloved for whom she Fell from Grace, or has she put all those that she holds dear in danger? Journey with Danann as she takes the path to taking back her Light and ascending to be Angel once more. Will the Archangel Uriel surrender her Light or will Danann be doomed to walk in darkness forever?
I have nothing but the highest praise for this book, it really did blow me away. Every review that I’ve read was glowing and after finishing it I understand why! The synopsis had me intrigued from the get-go. This is a love story that takes the saying “opposites attract” to a whole new level. What two supernatural beings could be further apart on the good vs evil scale than an angel and a vampire? But that’s not the only thing that differentiates them. The two main characters have lead entirely different lives and their mannerisms and thought processes are also very different.
Danann puts everything on the line for her beloved Seth when she chooses to fall from grace for him. She wakes up on Earth after the painful experience of being de-angelfied only to be separated from her soul mate because of a miscommunication. Danann finds herself alone and forced to live a life that she’s not accustomed to. I imagine going from being an angel to a human is quite the adjustment! Unfortunately for her, she doesn’t have it easy at all. Her new existence is full of tragedy and heartbreak. At first Dannan’s new weaknesses worried me. She becomes very dependent on others and needs to rely on vampires for many things. She gives off a strong useless vibe, which for me in a main character is a bad thing! But in her case it works. This book is probably not for you if you’re looking for a kick ass heroine. Dannan’s strength comes from within. The author writes this book in such a way that you end up really grasping this fallen angel’s reality. It’s hard to know a person until you’ve spent a day in their shoes and this proves to be very true in this tale.
This novel really takes off when Seth waltzes back into Danann’s life. I loved the extreme contrasts between the two of them. Their worlds are so different that it’s hard for them to understand each other. All of the assumptions that people typically make about others don’t hold up in their case. They have a hard time understanding each other’s feelings and actions and as a result Danann and Seth often think the worst of each other. After having been separated for 200 years because of a flawed assumption they are reluctant to trust each other (with good reason!). Their minds and hearts are pulling them in opposite directions. Danann and Seth feel inexplicably drawn to each other but at the same time their preconceptions clash to the extreme. Many of their mistakes are obvious to the reader but Joanne Valiukas’ writing style makes you understand why they’re not able to see what’s right in front of their eyes.
It’s hard to put into words how much I adored this book. Danann Frost Falls from Grace is about overcoming differences, how dangerous assumptions can be and how in the end, love conquers all. The dark vs light imagery in this story is truly remarkable. Don’t be fooled by the title and cover of this book because it’s an incredible tale and when you finish reading it you’ll find yourself wanting more.
