You can run from the grave, but you can't hide . . .
Half-vampire Cat Crawfield is now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, working for the government to rid the world of the rogue undead. She's still using everything Bones, her sexy and dangerous ex, taught her, but when Cat is targeted for assassination, the only man who can help her is the vampire she left behind.
Being around him awakens all her emotions, from the adrenaline kick of slaying vamps side by side to the reckless passion that consumed them. But a price on her head—wanted: dead or half-alive—means her survival depends on teaming up with Bones. And no matter how hard she tries to keep things professional between them, she'll find that desire lasts forever . . . and that Bones won't let her get away again.
Halfway to the Grave. The second book in the Night Huntress line-up did not disappoint. In fact, I think it topped the first one in some ways. This novel has all of the same elements that made the first one awesome only this one is loaded with even more vampire goodness.
Cat and Bones are back with a vengeance in this second installment. After four years apart they’re reunited and quickly realize that their feelings for each other are stronger than ever. I was happy that the reunion occurred sooner rather than later. It would have saddened me if I’d had to read half of the book before Bones made an appearance. I would have stuck it out but am relieved that I didn’t have to. There are so many terrific lines in this novel that I thought about compiling a list of my favorite quotes. Maybe I’ll work on that if I read this book a second time. I don’t typically re-read novels but I might make an exception for this series. It’s that good!
Miss Crawfield is now a full-blown special agent and she commands her own team. Meet Tate, Juan and Cooper. At first I was hoping that Cat would quit her job and team up with Bones again but later found that these men were a great addition to the story. They’re pretty badass for humans but in the world of vampires they’re chopped liver. Out of the three, Tate is my favorite. He hates the undead more than anything in the world and constantly has to bend his morals to do his job. He refuses to back down from a fight or a challenge and as a result finds himself walking a very thin line between the living and the dead. I think his sarcastic sense of humor is the only thing that gets him through the day at times.
There are quite a few jaw dropping moments in this book where Bones demonstrates how truly powerful he really is. Made me happy that he’s on Cat’s side otherwise she’d be in big trouble. Hopefully she doesn’t get on his bad side as this series progresses. Despite all of her skills and training I don’t think she’d stand a chance against her lover. Bones’ sense of humour made me laugh out loud at times. Namely the panties revelation that he made to Cat. If she were a real person, the look on her face during this conversation would have been priceless!
It would be near impossible to write an accurate review of this novel without dedicating at least a paragraph to talk about the sex. What I want to know is where can I get me my very own vampire orgasm machine!? When I finally arrived at Chapter 32 I had pretty high expectations. Regardless of what they were, this chapter blew them out of the water. Unfortunately for me, I read it before work one morning. What a long day that was! I’m now a believer in that it may very well be one of the hottest encounters ever written! Am I exaggerating? You’ll have to read this book to find out! No cheating and skipping ahead like I considered doing. The story and the build-up made it all the more enjoyable.
Last but not least, the ending of this book was jam packed with surprises. All of the pieces finally came together and the results left me in awe. Jeaniene Frost is a master storyteller! New tidbits are also introduced to leave the reader wanting more. I’m left wondering what Frost is going to throw at me in At Grave’s End. I don’t know if she can top this book but I’m definitely going to give her the chance to try. One Foot in the Grave is la crème de la crème of vampire fiction. Oh so good!
I really enjoy this series – it seems to get better with each installment. 🙂
Have a great weekend.
“What I want to know is where can I get me my very own vampire orgasm machine!? When I finally arrived at Chapter 32 I had pretty high expectations. Regardless of what they were, this chapter blew them out of the water.”
Oh, man, you said it!!! I almost DIED after reading that! It was PERFECTION! I don’t think it’s ever topped, but you will still continue to enjoy the series.
Jeaniene Frost, we salute you.
Glad you enjoyed it. 😉
I can’t review these, everything I write down just doesn’t seem good enough and I have too many amazings and awesomes and BONES…. *dreamysigh*
It is the best series out there imo. You should take your time through it though so your not jumping up and down for Feb. to come like me and a ton others. Huuuurrrryyyyyy up February!
Jeaniene Frost is absolutely amazing in how she writes! As you said some scenes were so funny and you REALLY FELT you were watching them in person. The panties comment by Bones to Cat, the catfight between Cat and Annette and CHAPTER 32!
I agree Chapter 32 is probably the hottest chapter ever written! LOL “vampire orgasm machine” if only BONES was real or if men could learn a lesson or TEN from him and emulate his sex appeal, charm, charisma, flair, humour, confidence, devotion, passion — I could go on. 🙂
You have to continue reading the rest of the series as Jeaniene never falters from sucking the reader into the world of Cat & Bones.
So glad you enjoyed One Foot in the Grave and as you said it is one of the best vampire fiction out there! 🙂
I’ve never read this book, but the premise is definitely intriguing, and I appreciate your well-thought-out review!
Thank you for dropping by my site today…I’m following you now, too 🙂

Can’t wait to see what you think of the next two! And don’t forget to check out her Night Huntress World series, but wait til after you’ve read the next two otherwise you’ll encounter spoilers and be a little confused!
Jessica – My TBR pile keeps getting bigger and bigger; you’re partially to blame for that! 😉 Thanks for the recommendations.
Great review, I really need to read something from this author. So many books, these just keep getting pushed back.

I’ve been eyeing this series for some time now, but because of my humongous TBR mountain, I did not pick it up… you just changed my mind 🙂 ….thank you for sharing your views…
Oh, I must pick this up – I’ve read the first one, but I’ve forgotten a bunch.
