1- If MAD MAGIC was a beverage what would it be (alcoholic or non) and why?
A rich mulled wine – meaning wine that has been simmered in a pot for a long time with cider, cinnamon sticks, zest, juice, cloves and star anise. Like Mad Magic, it’s a delicious, flavourful, and unique treat that’s full of surprises!
2- What are Josie’s favorite and least favorite subjects in high school?
Her favourite subject is history – especially now that Zeph and Eldrick have rocked her understanding of the world. She likes to try to detect the traces of faerie magic and influence weaved discreetly into the fabric of human history. Her least favourite subject is chemistry. After the incident with the Bunsen burner, she’s still leery of handling fire and chemicals around her peers. Who knows when a fae might decide to try some mischief again?
3- What are some of Zeph’s go-to items that he keeps in his backpack?
Unfortunately, Zeph isn’t known for being prepared. He’s very much a “shoot first ask questions maybe later probably never” kind of guy. But if he was toting a bag around, he’d stash it with lots of Josie’s homemade cookies, his zippo lighter, a few bundles of sage, some sharpies, and can of hairspray—cause you never know when you might need to roast a spriggan or two!
4- If Josie could enlist the help of a hero(ine) from another fictional universe, who would she pick and why?
Josie would definitely want Hermione Granger from Harry Potter on her side! She’d try to learn everything she could from Hermione about the world of magic, spellwork, and dealing with faerie monsters. I think the two would get along really well!
5- What kind of (minor) curse would you unleash on people if you had that ability?
Oooh, sometimes I get road rage pretty bad … so maybe one that immediately drained all their phone battery every time they cranked their car. You shouldn’t be texting or talking on the phone while driving anyway!!
6- If you could invent your own high school clique what would it be?
A clique of people who liked to study marine mammals, specifically whales and promote awareness for their preservation and keeping our oceans clean. We’d be called the “Pod Squad.”
7- What was your experience with monsters as a kid?
I was an imaginative, weird kid who loved dragons, magic, and pretending I was Simba from the Lion King. I don’t remember ever being scared of monsters or anything like that, though. I do believe in ghosts! It’s all fun and games until you’ve actually seen one!!
8- What was your favorite scene to write in MAD MAGIC?
Basically any scene with Zeph, Josie, and Eldrick bickering at one another. They are a strange gaggle of misfits, but I love their chemistry and constant heckling of one another. I guess if I had to choose just one, my favourite scene would be the one where Zeph is taunting Eldrick by trying to guess what kind of underwear he’s wearing.

After being orphaned, high school student Josie Barton only has one person she can turn to when things get rough—a mysterious legal guardian who calls himself her Benefactor. “Ben” takes care of everything for her. He pays her bills, provides food, clothes, and even a cell phone. But there is one thing Ben doesn’t know: Josie Barton sees scary imaginary creatures everywhere she goes. Even her apartment is being haunted by an invisible monster! And just when Josie thinks things couldn’t get any worse . . . she meets the guy from across the hall.
Zeph Clemmont is a man of many faces. He’s a changeling with enemies in all the worst places, fighting to undo a magical curse that could end his life. He loves a good argument and has incredible magical power, but he may have met his match in Josie. So far, she’s the only one who seems able to rein in his childish tantrums and magical explosions. Zeph will have to swallow his pride and finally let go of all his dark secrets if he really wants to break his curse. And with Josie at his side, he might actually stand a chance this time.
