Zhubaal, fallen angel assistant to the Grim Reaper, has spent decades searching for the angel he loved and lost nearly a century ago. Not even her death can keep him from trying to find her, not when he knows she’s been given a second chance at life in a new body. But as time passes, he’s losing hope, and he wonders how much longer he can hold to the oath he swore to her so long ago…
As an emim, the wingless offspring of two fallen angels, Vex has always felt like a second-class citizen. But if she manages to secure a deal with the Grim Reaper — by any means necessary — she will have earned her place in the world. The only obstacle in the way of her plan is a sexy hardass called Z, who seems determined to thwart her at every turn. Soon it becomes clear that they have a powerful connection rooted in the past…but can any vow stand the test of time?

This novella is set in the world built by Larissa Ione that starts of in the Demonica series and continues in the spin off series, Lords of Deliverance. You can read this novella as a stand alone novella if you want to dip your toe into the world. I do love the world that Ms. Ione has built. Demonica starts off with demon brothers that run a hospital. Each one finds their mate and they find out they have more siblings too. Then Lords of Deliverance is about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The characters are a ton of fun.
In this book, we don’t get to see many of the characters from the main series. Really there is only Azagoth and his mate and Revenant. I do love both of these characters and was happy to spend time with them again. I love how Ms. Ione was able to make the leaders of Hell be so evil, but yet loveable at the same time.
Zhubaal is a fallen angel and Azagoth’s right hand. He has spent all of his free time searching for the love of his life who feel before him. She died, but he wants to find her reincarnated soul. When he bonded with her, he felt it was for life, eternal life.
Vex is a emim, daughter of two fallen angels. She isn’t well liked among the others around Sheoul. She also has the ability to suck souls into herself after they are killed. There was a great market for demon souls, that is until Revenant put a stop to it. Now Vex has nowhere to go to get rid of these souls inside of her, but to Azagoth.
This is not my favorite of the novellas in the Demonica world. I thought Zhubaal’s obsession with his ex, Laura was very hurtful to Vex. I know that she felt used. Some of the things that are said would’ve made me walk away and never look back. He was wanting her to be someone she wasn’t and I know that I’m not willing to do that. Vex wasn’t either, but it took a bit.
I pretty much saw how this was all going to work out from the get go. I also figured out the whole ex-girlfriend thing from the beginning. That didn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy learning more about these two characters. I loved Vex. I thought she was a strong character with everything going against her and she stayed strong. I like how she stood up to Zhubaal’s treatment of her. There was a twist I didn’t see coming when a particular demon soul in Vex that Azagoth has a hard time getting out. That was a fun twist.
If you haven’t tried this series, I highly recommend it. It is a fun series with snark, sexy alpha males, strong women, action and all the fun of a Paranormal Romance or Urban Fantasy.

This is another author that I have heard a lot of about but not tried yet. 🙂
I love Larissa Ione’s stories.

I’ve been curious about this series. Glad this was another good one in it.
I love both the Demonica and Lords of Deliverance (a spinoff about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) . Both are great series.

I was not crazy about this one either. Z just was not my favorite character and his obsession with Laura was just so ignorant to Vex. It irritated me. It was fun to see Revenant and how he is ruling Sheoul.
I still love this series. I liked Vex too.

I read the first book in this series but I didn’t like it a whole lot, maybe I didn’t give it a chance. I’m giving serious thought to picking this series back up again just because of your review. I’m intrigued my these male characters out of both series.

Did you start with Demonica or Lords of Deliverance (which is a spinoff that starts after book 6). You can read Lords of Deliverance without having read the other Demonica books. Maybe you could try them first.

I just might do that, thank you!

I love both the Demonica series and The Lords of Deliverance series. I’ve read quite a few of her books and they’ve all been fabulous so far. Thanks for the great review of this one.

I really love this series, too. I’m really glad we’re still getting these novellas.

I really want to read more paranormal romance and this author seems to be a popular choice in the genre. I think reading novellas like this is the perfect aperitif.
Thanks for sharing, Melanie!
She is one of my favorite PNR authors. I love these stories.

I did try book 1, but eh
Not every series is for everyone. If you started with Demonica, you could try the Lords of Deliverance spinoff. It follows the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. If you wanted to give her another try.

Thanks for the review. I remember reading the first two books years ago. I need to start this series over again. I enjoyed, but so many other books have came and I can’t remember it all.

I really enjoy this series. It just gets better as the books go along, in my opinion.

These stories are making their way onto audio and I’ve got a few of them on my wishlist.
Really? I hadn’t heard that. This is one of the few series that I’m not a big fan of on audio. It has not had a consistent narrator. There have been some bad ones. I wish Hillary Huber narrated the entire series. I really liked her.

I can’t believe you actually listed ALL the Demonica/Lords of Deliverance books!!!! Dang girl! I LOVE the series and I’m up to Reaver’s book. Can you believe I haven’t read it yet, considering what we found out leading up to it?? Yeah, I’ve gotten distracted 🙁
Great review! I agree, her books keep getting better! I’ll have to add this novella b/c I love her little novellas, too!
Do you read her Moonbound Clan books, too? Have you heard anything about a book 3?
Reaver is one book that I do not recommend on audio. I hated that narration. I don’t remember who the narrator was, but I didn’t like it. Revenant went back to Hillary Huber who I loved. I wish she had done the entire series.
I’ve listened to the first Vamp book, but not the second. I have it, but just need to fit it in. I haven’t heard what she is up to for her next full length book. I do know that she wants to tackle the children from the Demonica series, but I don’t know of a timeline for that.

It’s nice this novella gives you the chance to dip your toes into this world or for fans fo the series to return to this world. That’s nice you at least got to see two of the characters again, although I can imagine if you know this series it would be fun to see more recurring characters. I am glad to hear this one had nice twists. I haven’t read this series, but it does sound interesting.

This is such a fun series. It has sex demons and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Yeah… obsessing about your ex is a hard one, I’m with you on that. You need to get past that if you’re starting a new relationship… But it still sounds like another good read in the series!

Yeah, this wasn’t my favorite in the series, but I still enjoyed it. I love the Demonica series. I highly recommend it if you haven’t tried it. It starts with demonic brothers who run a hospital for demons then moves to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. It has fallen angels, demons, vampires, werewolves and so much more.
